My son definitely sometimes sees clothing as optional. He really dislikes socks and shoes- even on the coldest days in winter, he would rather go barefoot than wear them. He is not keen on clothing tags, and he refuses to wear some of the hand-me-down t-shirts from his brother because he tells me the fabric is itchy. He will not wear gloves and belts are a ‘NO’. He allows himself to wear dress-up hats (such as a cowboy hat or a pirate hat) at any time EXCEPT on Halloween, but when asked to wear a hat to keep his head warm, his answer depends on his mood that day. Sometimes he will try and wear two pairs of boxer shorts instead of shorts, and he is happiest when his clothing is red.
But pajamas- well, he loves pajamas. He loves that they are soft, that they are easy to move around in, and that his pajamas have animals on. When he is having a hard day, he will often go and change into his pajamas to feel better. They are not too warm or too cool, and he would happily spend all day wearing them.
I guess some people find comfort after a long day with a big glass of red wine or a good book by the fire. Pajamas are his thing, and as the saying goes, ‘if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em’.
