In 7 Halloweens, this was the first time my son has been happy to wear a costume. We have brought him multiple costumes in the past- the latest superhero, his favorite Paw Patrol character etc. We got excited when he picked out a firefighter outfit and then were disappointed when it remained in the Halloween dress-up box. So when this year he asked to be a bat (NOT Batman – remember he loves animals), I excitedly ordered him a bat costume (as much as I would love to be a mum that makes these costumes, I just don’t have the time), but was unsure if he would wear it.
met a girl that was dressed as Maleficent, he commented that she ‘had horns like a gazelle’. When we went to one house in particular that had a lot of decorations (both outside and in), he got so carried away with checking everything out that he had to wander inside – it’s a good job our neighbors are so understanding!
Then at one point, he just sat down on the step of a house, looked in my direction and asked to go home. Sensory overload had hit and it was time to go back to his books and a bath, as water has always helped soothe him and satisfy his sensory needs.
