Autism and Sleep (or lack of it)

The excitement of Christmas, getting on an airplane next week, and going on vacation to see family is all a little too much for my autistic 7 year old.

He was so tired on Monday that we slept from 6pm – 6am! I was so happy that he was able to rest and had hoped that this was the turning point back to his better sleep routine. Tuesday and Wednesday were ok, but it still took him a little longer than normal to fall asleep- at least he didn’t wake in the night.

However, I still think all the extra stimulation he is having to cope with at the moment and the upcoming change in his routine is so draining for him. At school, while climbing on the playground, he slipped, banged his head and, in his words, ‘hurt my left butt cheek‘ (he cracks me up with some of the things he says!) The school nurse checked him over and my son wanted to lay down and rest. He wasn’t bothered that there was already another child resting in the only bed, he just climbed up to join them. On the bus on the way home, he fell asleep and then, because of that, he didn’t sleep last night until gone 10pm and was awake this morning at 5:30am.

We have decided to pick him up early from school today (Friday), as I can see him falling asleep on the bus again! Fingers crossed he can get more sleep tonight.
