My neurotypical son wanted to be interviewed about his brother, so here it is:
How old are you? Almost 10 years old.
What do you understand autism to be? That’s hard….I’m not sure– I think his brain works a little differently than mine.
What do you love about your brother? That he plays with me and my dog.
What games does he like to play with you? We like to make up games together, like when I spin him around on the trampoline.
Do you think there are things that your brother finds hard? Math, reading, writing and sometimes talking.
What is a happy memory you have of your brother? That’s a hard one… the time we went to Disneyland and we sat next to each other on the rides.
How do you think your brother is different from you? That I talk more than my brother, that I like sports and team sports more than he does. I’m stronger but that is because I’m older. I can be trusted to do things on my own and my brother can’t.
What things do you like to do? I like [American] football, playing with my friends, computer games (Roblox and Fortnite) and basketball.
What mades you proud of your brother? That he is kind to me.
As they say, never work with children and animals! I will interview him again in 6 months and see how his answers change…
