Some of my son’s autistic traits

He hates to wear socks (and shoes). We will put his socks on, go and fetch his shoes, but by the time we bring them to him, he will have already taken his socks off. As soon as school is finished, socks and shoes come off in the car. In fact, sometimes we don’t bother putting his socks or shoes on until we get to our destination. There are often multiple sock scattered around the house that have only been worn for mere minutes. I think that he finds that the fabric irritates his skin. He is better with socks that have no seams, and I have to make sure the heel part of the sock is correctly positioned on his heel. But where possible, I don’t make him wear them.

Listening to the same song, over and over again. When my son likes a song, he will listen to it over and over again, and not always the whole song; it can just be a specific part of the song that he wants to listen to. Listening to a song, over and over, is also a form of auditory stimming for him. It gives him a sense of predictability and routine. At the moment Die Young by Kesha is the song of choice on replay, but some of his other favorites are Thunder by Imagine Dragons, ME! by Taylor Swift, or Colonel Hathi’s March from The Jungle Book. One day I might be able to listen to my music!
